Non-Slip Tapes for Decking and Pavement

When used properly, non-slip tape can prevent accidents and even add flair to your deck’s design. Usually made of flexible and durable materials, non slip tapes are attached with self- adhesive properties or added adhesive compounds.

There are quite a few tapes out there with varying materials, textures and colors to consider.  For an easier time picking which one to use, take a look at our quick guide in choosing non-slip tapes.

Transparent

This type of anti-slip tape is usually made of silicon and comes in smooth, patterned or grainy textures.  Transparent strips is the best option if you don’t want the tape to be evident in your design. However, the reflecting light from smooth strips as well as the foggy look on frosted ones still create some variance. It’s best to lay out these strips in a uniform pattern with the same length and width for better outcome.

Colored

Colored non-slip tapes are available in various materials such as silicone and rubber. To maintain harmony in your existing decking design, it’s best to use non-slip tapes within the same color family.  Before shopping for the color you have in mind, try plotting your pattern using colored paper to see how it will come up once laid out.

Colored and Textured

Since we usually walk around the pool barefoot, it’s best to use the standard texture for poolside anti-slip tapes. These strips are usually classified as standard, coarse and extra-coarse. Usually, coarse and extra coarse textures can damage cloth and bare skin so it’s best to shop in physical stores to see which texture works best for your deck. They come in various width and colors such as gray, black and brown. Gray textured tape gives the appearance of a stone finish which nicely pairs with dark timber decks, walkways and garages.

Rubber Pads and Mats

Rubber non-slip pads also work well. However, its industrial look may not easily fit with common decking themes today. It’s usually very thick, sturdy and  is commonly available in black, red and blue.

Preparation

Generally, you need to clean and dry the area before applying  non-slip tape. It’s especially important if you’re putting the tape on surfaces near the pool. This will prevent any type of growth underneath the tape. It will also make the tape stick easily while prolonging the strength of its bond to the surface. When your surface is ready, measure the length of the area and cut the tape accordingly to have a uniformed look. Mark the surfaces where you’ll put the tape to avoid necessary corrections after it’s been fixed.

Non-slip tapes has simplicity that goes a long way in adding safety features to your decking and pavement. Treated timber decking tends to be a little slippery while smooth pavements pose more danger especially when it’s near the pool. The humble non-slip tape is a great solution – it’s simple, cheap, easy to use and effective.
